NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX already popping up in stores?

Monday, March 31st, 2008

We got that photo in from reader Ryan, who found a small cache of NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX cards at Best Buy, each priced at $360 for 512MB versions. Can they just release these things already?

[Thanks, Ryan]

Pleo finally learns to sit with Life OS 1.1

Monday, March 31st, 2008

Filed under:

Although Pleo just got upgraded to v1.0.2 earlier that month, UGOBE is taking the Life OS to 1.1 and adding a laundry list of features to boot. Initially available for install only through an SD card (download via USB should hit within a few weeks), the update enables your favorite dino pet to sit, sing a variety of melodies, signal for attention, get sick (coughing / sneezing) and change attitudes based on how much attention it gets. As these things always go, there’s plus the promise of a few unannounced inclusions (”strange habits,” as it were), and it should be noted that previous downloads — Holiday, Love-struck, MySkit, Yapt, etc. — will need to eventually be re-downloaded in new versions to be compatible with the Life OS 1.1 update. Give the read link some attention to check out the changes, and fire up the download while you’re by there.

[Thanks, Caaahl]

A Million Palm Centro Sold

A Million Palm Centro Sold

One might say that Palm’s days are pretty stormy but today was a good day as the company announced that more than a million units of its entry-level Centro have been bought by customers. That’s good news for Palm, as many phones from big companies don’t even sell more than 100,000 units.

Unfortunately the margins on the Centro are not likely to be high, but we hope that it will be abundant cash to let Palm come up with a thinner phone.

Intel Wants to Connect Small Devices to Big Displays

Intel Wants to Connect Small Devices to Big Displays

Intel is said to be working on a wireless protocol that would connect the video output from small devices like smartphones, media players to a larger display (monitor, TV…). The notion of connecting small devices on large displays is good: small displays inherently limit the usability of the user interface, given that visual interfaces are currently the best.

But “how” the gadget connects to the large display is not really the central issue. Today, it would be possible to send video details via USB, but the real issue is that the operating system (OS) embedded in these small devices does not support larger formats. additionally, there is little to no video hardware acceleration in many devices. That becomes a serious issue at higher resolutions. At least the hardware exists for that.

I would love to be able to connect my smartphone to a large keyboard and monitor to reply to emails, or browse the web. Hopefully, that work by Intel will get us one step closer.

Sony Ericsson Z750a

Sony Ericsson Z750a

Sony Ericsson has rolled out the Z750a, making it the first 3G/HSDPA handset for the US market to period. that affordable and stylish handset features a reflective mirror clamshell case, complete with a hidden OLED reflective display screen in front which illuminates discreetly whenever there is an incoming shout or notice. I love such displays, and they have been used in previous Sony Walkmans thus far to great effect. Other features found on the Z750a include :-

  • 2 megapixel camera
  • 3G connectivity
  • AT&T Mobile e mail application support
  • 26MB internal memory
  • Memory Stick Micro slot
  • 3D gaming capability
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • 2.2” QVGA 262k Color TFT display

The Sony Ericsson Z750a will come in Mysterious Purple, Phantom Grey and Rose Pink colors when it arrives in AT&T stores and authorized dealers early that month for $49.99 after a $100 mail-in-rebate and a 2-year contract.

Sony’s HDR-SR12 1080/60 camcorder gets reviewed

Monday, March 31st, 2008

Sony launched the hot little HDR-SR12 HD camcorder in a overwhelming barrage of new models at CES, so it hasn’t really gotten the love it deserves, but the crew by at CamcorderInfo recently took one for a spin and found that while the $1399 cam isn’t the cheapest option out there, it’s still a strong competitor to popular options like the Canon HF100. Although the video bitrate is a bit lower than the Canon at 16Mbps, image quality was overall comparable due to the Bionz image processor and Exmos CMOS sensor, which is the same chip found in Sony’s Alpha DSLRs, and it’s got the most storage available at 120GB. The only other potential dealbreaker is the fixed 60i framerate, but whether shooting in 30p or 24p isn’t urgent to you, the HDR-SR12 looks like it’s worth a spot on your list.

Flower Filament Concept

Monday, March 31st, 2008

Flower Filament Concept

The Flower Filament concept aims to bring together nature and technology, and it certainly isn’t the first to think along that line. Inside the bulb lies a flower, enabling it to light up. Yup - no flower, no potential. No concept how designer Ha-Na Yeom managed to conjure a light bulb that is able to detect whether there is a flower inside or not. I guess a little bit of magic never hurt. I don’t think that concept will ever take off since flowers wilt so fast, leaving you exasperated as the missus thinks that you have losed out to pay the electricity bill yet again that month.
